In 1978, with the Hollywood sign teetering on the edge of disaster, Playboy publisher and future Beverly Hills Cop II co-star Hugh Hefner decided it was time for an all-new version. Gathering the glitterati at the Playboy Mansion, Hefner raised $275,000 — enough to replace the tattered old sign, its little tin panels falling off its wooden support posts, with a new one with large corrugated steel sections mounted on gleaming metal beams.
Hooray for Hefner, Saver of Sign!
34 years later, the sign’s still in pretty good shape. But its future is up in the air, what with body parts being found next to it, residents griping about tourists traipsing around it, and Danish architects’ wanting to turn it into a hotel.
